Debbie Ngarewa-Packer Calls for Te Tiriti Entrenchment and Resource Protection
Te Pāti Māori candidate for Te Tai Hauāuru, Debbie Ngarewa-Packer, delivered a strong message regarding kaitiakitanga, Te Tiriti rights, and resource protection during the Climate Justice Taranaki environmental debate at Te Hāwera Senior Citizen Hall.
Addressing the current government's legislative direction, Ngarewa-Packer raised serious concerns about protections being stripped away to benefit corporate interests.
“The most hōhā thing it’s done is come out and attack us and attack our tiriti that then means that they're able to remove us as active kaitiaki, they're able to have more corporates come in and exploit us our people, our taiao, our tiriti. We’ve got to go back and push back and make sure they can never do it,” she stated.
She emphasized that entrenching Te Tiriti o Waitangi must remain the primary political priority to shield Māori rights from legislative fluctuations.
“What they've gone and shown in their Trumpoesees way is actually how exposed we are to the swing of these 2 major parties so we have to entrench Te Tiriti. That's our primary goal and to never ever have the kind of attacks and callback in this government,” she declared.
Furthermore, Ngarewa-Packer set a firm line regarding environmental protection policy, particularly concerning marine ecosystems.
“I want to make sure that everyone that’s on the supposed left block have got a standing agreement that we will ban seabed mining. That is a bottom line, always has been for me,” she added.
