New Kapa Haka Performers Represent Waitara East at Te Huihuinga o Ngā Tatarakihi 2026
Te Kāhui o Ngā Mātā Raukura from Waitara East School are preparing to take the stage at the regional competition, Te Huihuinga o Ngā Tatarakihi 2026.
Although most of the group are newcomers to the world of kapa haka, their passion and excitement have seen them proudly represent Waitara East School.
Kapa Haka tutor Linda Ritai reflected on the journey of the students as they overcame initial hesitation to build resilience and confidence.
“For most of them, given that this is a new experience for them in Kapa Haka, it was difficult and we saw that they were a bit hesitant, but in this bracket we saw their resilience and strength grow,” said Linda Ritai.
She emphasized that her main hope for the students is rooted in identity and connection to their heritage.
“So that they hold fast to their own identity as Māori students, to feel once again the spirit of the ancestors during the performance, and to feel and be steadfast in the aspects of kapa haka,” she added.
Female leader Huia Robertson shared her feelings about performing on stage and managing the responsibilities of leading the group, “I was a little bit nervous, but when I went up there I was excited,” said Huia Robertson.
“Everybody relies on me, but it’s okay. Sometimes, it’s a little bit hard but I just get back into it,” she said.
