Finding Connection Through Movement

Whaitua o Rēhia, a movement and dance programme established by Mareana Te Raukura Tume-McGuckin, is helping women in Whanganui and Manawatū reconnect with themselves and improve their overall wellbeing.

Created as a space for movement and expression, the programme has grown beyond its initial focus on women to become a community hub for anyone seeking health and connection.

For participant Jonelle Hiroti-Kinane, the programme has been transformative, helping her manage the stresses of daily life. Reflecting on her experience, she shared.

“We're in our head a lot, you know. We're constantly going through tasks, decisions, making plans, navigating feelings and kind of setting everybody else's rhythm or adjusting our rhythm to meet everyone else's rhythm. We never really get to check in with ourselves and we're quite often, you know, we're stuck in our heads a lot. This kaupapa has helped me kind of land back in my tinana.”

Mareana’s vision is not just about dance, but about fostering a holistic sense of self. She notes that the programme has been vital for confidence, adding

“The main goal is the person - the people who are drawn to and take part in this programme. That they gain a greater understanding of themselves, believe in themselves, show compassion towards themselves, and become grounded and committed within themselves. That is the greatest dream.”
