The elders of Ngāti Maru recently gathered at a special event to celebrate Puanga.

The occasion served as a vital opportunity for connection, shared meals, and reflection on the future of the iwi.
For many, the day was about bridging generations.
Pauline Matuku, a Kuia of Ngāti Maru, emphasized the importance of passing down knowledge.
"I’d like to see the vision of Ngāti Maru embedded in the mokopuna through education, through learning about the kaimoana, te reo Māori, and discipline, which will lead our future mokopuna."
Anaru Marshall, Tumu Whakarae o Ngāti Maru, highlighted the value of these moments for community health and well-being.
"It’s always good to come together with the kaumātua," he noted.
"It’s nice just to have a relaxing afternoon, have some kai, and just spend some time together."
The gathering served as a reminder that these events are not just about food and fun, but are essential for strengthening the bonds of whānau and ensuring that stories and traditions are preserved for generations to come.
